Book Reading 3:30: Behind-the-Scenes of the Graphic Novel SHOOTING WAR

I’m Dan Goldman, co-creator of the graphic novel SHOOTING WAR that satirizes the media and its war on terror; I’ll be speaking on the Day Stage today at 3:30 pm about SHOOTING WAR’s evolution from free online comic to hardcover graphic novel to its future form as a TV series, as well as giving you a peek behind the curtain at my all-digital art processes involved in designing and creating the story’s dystopian landscape of Baghdad in 2011.

Design lessons from ancient Rome

Jennifer Fraser

Jennifer Fraser from Corel drew parallels between ancient Roman architecture values of firmitas, utilitas and venustas and contemporary web and application design. As an artist and educator I especially appreciate Fraser’s wonderfully illustrated lessons from design and social innovators from the past.

How to Blog on Company Time

by Tracksuit CEO

In our SXSW Interactive session entitled: Blog on Company Time Without Getting Dooced, we’re going to be looking at the relationship between your blog and your day job. We’ll show you how not to get fired for your blog, we’ll also show you how to get a promotion because of your blog. But right now I’m going to show you why yno-blogging-in-line.jpgou don’t really need company time to blog (believe it or not).

In my post on How to Use Diigo I showed you how Diigo can make your blogging routine much more efficient. Diigo is just one of those online tools that has so many uses, you can actually adapt it to do what you need it to. My team and I are helping Diigo alpha-test the next version of their tool (coming soon). In our eBook we’ll share tools like these that we could probably live without, but life would just lose all of its joy and vigor if we did.

So you may be asking, “How can I possibly write a blog post without dipping my pen in the company ink?” Well, here are some ways to do just that:

The 2 minute blog post

To execute the 2 minute blog post you must do 3 things:

  1. Join Diigo.com
  2. Have a blog
  3. Read things on the Internet

Okay, so if you’re still reading that means you have all 3 of these things under your belt (or soon will).

When reading an article that inspires you to write a blog post, you should simply highlight the text you want to quote then right click and choose “Blog This”.

right-click-blog-this.jpg

If you haven’t already done so, you will then be prompted to set up your blog(s). Once the initial set up is done you will see a window like this:

blog-this.JPG

In the window appears the text you highlighted (they even indent it for you), so all that is left is for you to do is write your post. Because of certain constraints of this tool (difficulty uploading pictures, limited visual editing), I’m allowing 1 minute for you to write here. Just a comment or pithy summary of the quote will do, nothing fancy. More involved and longer posts should be reserved for your blog’s editor or BlogDesk (Ross Hunter writes all about this great tool in the eBook).

The last thing for you to do is simply publish your post. You’re done, a 2 minute blog post! You can tell your employer I said, “you’re welcome”.

Let’s meet up: daniel@tracksuitceo.com

TrackSuit CEO will be at SXSW Interactive March 9 at 11:30 in Ballroom E

Come join the conversation on Blogging on Company Time

The iPhone SDK (and the $100m iFund) is out. Want application ideas / inspirations?

Apple announced the iPhone SDK today. I have to say that the demos are very impressive and the “app store” concept is very well thought of — it gets around the carrier and lets Apple become the “deck” for iPhone applications. I am sure that mobile developers would much rather work with Apple than with wireless carriers!

Now, with the $100m iFund bounty, I am sure every mobile developer is learning Object C as we speak and race to develop the coolest iPhone application now. But what kind of applications should you write? What kind of applications can best take advantage of the native SDK capabilities?

picture-43.png

Some applications, for example our SXSW Mobile Companion: http://webclip2go.com/sxsw08, is quite sufficient as an iPhone rich web application — the additional hurdle of having to download the native app may not pay off.

Well, an obvious place to search for cool application ideas is the native application landscape for other smartphone devices! You can then adopt / optimize those applications for the iPhone! To see what people have done on the Nokia Symbian platform, and give yourself some inspiration on your big iPhone application, come to my SXSW book reading on this Sat for the Nokia Smartphone Hacks book!

Make this Web Work for You

On a Web where everyone is talking, how do you create a voice that breaks through? No doubt there’s something special about you and the services or product you offer, but somehow that message isn’t getting through. Find out how to attract customers to you, get them to interact, and hold their attention. Let’s see how we can work smarter rather than harder.

Join me, Denise Shiffman, Saturday at 3pm at the Adobe Day Stage Cafe to learn the key takeaways from my new book, The Age of Engage.

An Invitation to Play the Web

SXSW Interactive attendees are deep internet users. The web and mobile internet permeates their relationships, their professional histories, the story of how they found friends, found a reason to move to another city, or found something to do with all their twitchy energy.

How do you demonstrate your mastery of the web? How do you show people the far corners of your favorite internets? Can you demonstrate your talent for finding important/useful/so-hot-right-now sites before your familiars?

We wanted to fashion a game to allow just such a thing: a game that rewards smart web surfing, a game about skillfully wielding a web browser. The game is called PMOG: the Passively Multiplayer Online Game.

We call it passive, because unlike other rich, deep, social online games, PMOG can be played without playing. Install a Firefox extension and you will already be getting ahead in life. Earn points, leave traps or treasure across the web. Or just ignore the game after you install it, and let someone else online surprise you on your favorite online haunts.

We think this kind of passive play is a recipe for a good time. We also think we have a lot to learn from the smart folks at SXSW. If you want a chance to play before SXSW starts, and you haven’t gotten a PMOG beta invitation, please email justin at gamelayers d0t com, or call 888-840-PMOG (888-840-7664) and leave me a message with your email address spelled out, mention SXSW and I’ll invite you before the show.

Then come join our PMOG: The Web as a Play Field discussion on Monday, March 10th, 2-3pm, Room 8. We look forward to playing the web with you!

Outsourcing is Dead: a core conversation - Saturday @ 5pm

You do it every day and never think twice: buy something that was made in another country.

Maybe you make a big purchase, like a Honda or a BMW. Do you then refer to your car as your ‘outsourced’ ride? When you drink with your friends, do you get uncomfortable knowing that your champagne has been ‘outsourced’ to the French? How about when you eat a mango or a banana?

Of course not. Germans make better cars. The French know their wine. And produce comes from where it grows (or where people can pick it cheaply…California).

So why think of software that way? Global IT teams support cost advantages and time efficiencies that domestic teams simply cannot compete with. Done right, software can be developed more quickly and efficiently this way. From cars to wine to software, the principle is the same. It will inevitably get done where it can get done best.

As long as we refer to our work as outsourcing, we are stigmatizing something that is as old as civilization. What the monsoon winds did for the spice trade, the Internet does for software development.
